Living Through South Africa's Apartheid in Trevor Noah's Memoir "Born a Crime"

This essay is about Trevor Noah's memoir Born a Crime. The author highlights Trevor's challenges as a mixed-raced boy during South Africa's apartheid. The author detailed how the South African government categorized Chinese immigrants as Black and Japanese immigrants as white, and South Africans could not tell the difference between the two. Things were further complicated by 11 official languages when South Africa could be navigated effectively by only speaking two: English and Afrikaans. Trevor attended schools that included white, Black, mixed-race, Indian, and Chinese wealthy, middle-class, working-class, and township students. Trevor was never really sure where he fit in.
