The very broad opening sentences means the reader doesn't have a good footing from the start: is this essay about literature, the literature of the Philippines, or Bernido's memoirs? Currently, the first and last paragraphs suggest a more general discussion about how literature is shaped; however, this project is not further made clear in the middle paragraph. The first shorter paragraph and the second longer paragraph share many common points that don't benefit from the repetition--revise these two paragraphs to eliminate redundancy.
